I am a firm believer in the open free flow of ideas and resources to all, after all why were we as children ever thought to share? Does this concept only apply to the juvenile, and after we age does it go away? To me having infinite access to knowledge is what freedom and democracy is all about. Let us educate ourselves, let us believe in what we wish to believe, even if it goes against the set social norms. There are thousands if not millions of unpublished authors who might have better ideas, better self-expression, or theories than that of publish authors of textbooks from which we are taught. Should we not have the right to choose our own curriculum and lesson plans? Not everyone wants to learn what we are taught, not all of us have the same capabilities to withstand or withhold one hour daily of calculus or physics. We are NOT ALL EQUAL, to every sense of these words! Some of us are poor, some are wealthy, some are book-smart, some are street-smart, and some are both. There is no avoiding the fact that we do not live in a Utopia, but why not make the best of it. By combining our special talents and gifts, which by the way we all do have, we can in the words of the brave United States Army “Be all that We can be.” As cheesy as this may sound, I stand by it 100 percent, our future depends on how well we can work together without strangling the life out of each other.
The share of ideas is not only limited to that of social beliefs, politics, or news, but it extends to technology. One persons idea or invention with a little modification can become a great asset to many, in certain cases even save thousands of lives. Open Source is the foundation to further technological development, without knowing how something works how can we the public fix it, or yet make it better? I believe that everyone should live by the principle and practices that promote free and minimally restricted access to production and design of goods, products, and services that are provided to the general public.
Many of us, and I do speak from experience, are constantly being told to act our age or stop acting childish. From now on we should ignore these constant reminders and in a way begin to act like children. Its time we learn to share!
